All Australian marine authorities require all new ships and all existing ships being brought under survey for the first time, to undergo an initial survey to ensure compliance. The inspection process is undertaken by authority surveyors or by accredited entities to issue certificates of compliance.
Upon approval, the ship is issued with a Certificate of Registration that must be prominently displayed on the vessel. A certificate of survey containing the following items:
- name of ship
- identifying number
- number of passengers
- number of crew
- class of ship
- limit(s) of operations
- measured length and/or gross tonnage
- issuing authority
- signatures of authorised officer(s)
- period of validity.
